With the potential for high efficiency and reduced degradation, the production of n-type solar cells is expanding. Particularly encouraging has been the progress made with n-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) – with efficiencies rivalling or even exceeding heterojunction, and production techniques to minimize LeTID having been put in place.

Chinese manufacturer Jinko Solar is betting big on n-type TOPCon, looking to transition its high efficiency lines from the dominant p-type to n-type. In fact, Jinko plans to massively increase its shipments of n-type products to the Australian market.

Australia’s renowned appetite for new technology, alongside its aggressive utility-scale segment, makes the country a particularly interesting one for manufacturers like Jinko, looking to prove their technological developments at scale. So, what promise does n-type TOPCon hold? And why is it particularly useful in Australia’s hot and increasingly humid climate?
