The Washington Center's federal internships staff will walk participants through the FTA Diversity in Federal Transit internship application process, with a focus on eligibility and getting your required application documents polished and ready to submit. DFT internship selection is competitive, so sign up to get tips on writing an informative resume, lining up a Letter of Recommendation, interviewing with internship hosts, and what the program is like day-to-day. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask general or specific questions about the program.

The FTA Diversity in Federal Transit internship program seeks undergraduate, graduate, and law students for a fulfilling, paid 10-week summer internship. A DFT internship is your unique opportunity to work on meaningful projects for FTA, strengthen your professional networks and skills, and have an enduring impact in areas of public mass transit systems. The FTA administers federal funding to support a variety of locally planned, constructed, and operated public transportation systems throughout the United States.
This program is a critical part of FTA efforts to increase diverse representation in its workforce. Students from backgrounds underrepresented in federal leadership are strongly encouraged to apply.
DFT interns must be degree-seeking graduate, undergraduate, or law students who will have completed at least their freshman year of college before the internship begins and will be enrolled to continue their studies in the fall 2025 semester. Graduate applicants should be enrolled in the fall 2024 semester; law applicants should be entering 2L or 3L in fall 2024. DFT 2025 will be held in-person at Federal Transit Administration offices in Washington, D.C. and across the country. Your assignment to an FTA office is based on your application materials and interviews with FTA staff. A stipend of $6,100-$8,100 for undergraduate interns and $8,100-$10,100 for graduate and law interns will be provided. The DFT program also includes optional shared furnished housing, and roundtrip travel to and from the internship site city (if eligible). The final stipend amount is based on your decision to accept or decline TWC-organized shared housing.
