About Young At Art:
Young At Art is a collaboration between Astral Artists, Play On Philly and Mural Arts Philadelphia.

In this series of virtual concerts, Astral and Play On Philly have joined together to create small groups of chamber musicians of all ages and levels of experience. Each concert pairs works from the Mural Arts collection with a specific instrument group- brass, percussion, woodwinds, harp and strings.

We invite you to join us on a journey of expression and creativity through murals and music.

The POP Wind Ensemble features 4th-11th grade students. Students in Play On Philly receive intensive music education as a vehicle for life skills and academic achievement.

Annie Wu, Flute

Astral Artist

A winner of the 2015 Astral Artists National Auditions and a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, Annie Wu has been soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, Vienna International Orchestra, California Symphony, Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Livermore-Amador Symphony, Diablo Symphony Orchestra, and the San Jose Chamber Orchestras. She is the recipient of a number of awards, including First Prize winner of the 2016 James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition and the 2011 National Flute Association’s High School Soloist Competition, where she was the youngest winner in the competition’s history. Annie recently self-released her debut album, They Call Me Mignon: 11 variations on a voice, and graduated from Harvard University in Comparative Literature. As a student of a five-year dual degree program between Harvard and the New England Conservatory, she also received a Master’s degree in Flute Performance.

Staircases and Mountaintops: Ascending Beyond the Dream

Following a meeting with PhillyRising Collaborative and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center in North Philadelphia, Mural Arts gathered a team to create Staircases and Mountaintops: Ascending Beyond the Dream, a continuation and expansion of the work Mural Arts’ Restorative Justice Guild Program was already doing at the facility. The mural – based on a photograph by William Lovelace – depicts Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, as they led a voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in March 1965.

Common Threads

A few moments’ study unravels the mural’s visual metaphor. With the exception of one iconic central figure, Common Threads depicts real, contemporary young people imitating postures of historical figurines. Each pair – human and figurine – is painted in the same scale. Some are dozens of feet tall, while others are only twice as large as life. Some pairings mirror each other from opposing sides of the composition; others stand side-by-side.
