About this Summit
The Gulf Coast Campus Safety Summit is a regional and affordable conference for college and university administrators, faculty, staff, and students interested in improving their campus efforts to prevent and respond to sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. The Gulf Coast Campus Safety Summit will be held virtually, through a series of live and on-demand webinars, from April 14-21, 2021.

Thanks to corporate and foundation sponsors and partnerships, we are able to keep the virtual Gulf Coast Campus Safety Summit registration fees extremely affordable. Our rationale is to encourage campuses to send multi-disciplinary teams to attend, increasing the impact of the Summit on every campus represented. We are committed to hosting a wide range of regional campus safety representatives at every Summit, while maintaining the highest quality conference of its kind.

    ​Our mission is to provide quality educational programming that prevents gender and relationship violence. Working through secondary schools, colleges and universities, and community-based organizations and agencies, Jana’s Campaign delivers specialized prevention strategies and curricula that is designed to prevent violence, build healthy relationships, and create new social norms.

    Dr. Shamus Khan
    Co-Author of Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus
    Dr. Shamus Khan is a professor of sociology and American studies at Princeton University and the author of dozens of books and articles on inequality, American Culture, gender, and elites. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN and many other media outlets.

    Dr. Jennifer Hirsch
    Co-Author of Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus
    Dr. Jennifer Hirsch is a professor of socio-medical sciences at Columbia University, and her research spans five intertwined domains:
    the anthropology of love; gender, sexuality and migration; sexual reproductive & HIV risk practices; social science research on sexual assault, and the intersection between anthropology and public health. She was recently named 'Heroes in the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence' of New York City

    Sexual violence prevention programming on college campuses often focuses on bystander intervention strategies by providing students with skills to become active bystanders. This approach views all members of a campus community as potential interventionists challenging damaging social norms and working to prevent harmful situations; however, it can overlook a student's multifaceted identity including their gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship, and class. Student's identities either as a member of a marginalized or privileged group affects their ability to intervene in situations of bias, discrimination, potential violence, and acts of violence. This workshop will explore how participants can include the practical ways to integrate intersectional root causes of interpersonal violence in active bystander trainings, as well as discuss what could make it more or less challenging for someone to "stand up."
